For the Van Reenen family, these are more than words—they are the foundation on which they are building a new legacy at Kus tot Kruin, a farm nestled in the mountains near Herbertsdale in the Western Cape.
When the family purchased the farm in July 2024, they knew they were taking on a challenge. Originally bought in 2003 with plans for a residential estate, those plans never materialised, leaving the land largely underutilised. Where many saw obstacles, the Van Reenen family saw opportunity. Leaving behind established farming operations in South Africa’s northern provinces was no small decision. It meant starting over, adapting to a new region and building something that future generations could one day call their own.
Their vision was clear: to develop a sustainable farming business rooted in faith, hard work and respect for the land.
A road where none existed
Like many farming stories, this one began with water.
Before vegetables could be planted, the family first had to solve one of the farm’s greatest challenges. The only reliable water source was the Gourits River at the foot of the mountain. Reaching it, however, seemed almost impossible. Many believed a road could never be built down the steep mountainside.
The Van Reenen family chose to believe otherwise.
With determination, prayer, countless hours of hard work and the skill of an experienced excavator operator, they carved a road into the mountain. Pipelines were laid, dams were built and, by December 2024, the first vegetable crops were planted and irrigated.
What once seemed impossible had become reality.
Today, Kus tot Kruin is a thriving herb and vegetable farm supplying Woolworths, with every harvest representing months of perseverance and belief in what the land could become.
Success brought a new challenge
As the farm grew, so did its demand for reliable energy.
Operating in a remote area without access to the national electricity grid meant irrigation pumps, boreholes and daily operations relied almost entirely on diesel generators. While dependable, diesel came with rising fuel costs, ongoing maintenance and the uncertainty that many South African farmers know all too well.
The family knew renewable energy could help secure the farm’s future.
But after several disappointing experiences with different solar companies, finding the right solution became another challenge in itself.
They weren’t looking for someone to simply install solar panels.
They were looking for people who understood farming.
More than a solar installation
That search eventually led them to Eco Blu, who, together with renewable energy partner Energy4All and investment partner DG Capital, worked closely with the family to understand how the farm operated before designing a solution.
Rather than installing one large system, three dedicated off-grid solar systems were developed to power the farm’s most critical operations:
- A 30 kW system powering the borehole;
- A 50 kW system supplying the offices and administrative facilities; and
- A specially engineered 125 kW solar system built on the mountainside to power the river pump supplying irrigation water across the farm. Because of the steep, remote terrain, it became the most technically demanding aspect of the entire installation, requiring a solution specifically designed for the farm’s unique environment.
Together, the systems provide 205 kW of installed solar capacity, helping reduce diesel consumption by an estimated 70–80%, depending on seasonal demand.
Equally important was making the project financially achievable. Through an innovative financing solution, the family was able to transition to renewable energy without the burden of a large upfront capital investment—something that remains one of the biggest barriers preventing many farms from making the switch.
For the Van Reenen family, however, the greatest value wasn’t simply installing a solar system.
It was finding a long-term partner they could trust.
After previous disappointments, they wanted the reassurance that someone would still be there long after the installation was complete. As part of the project, Eco Blu continues to maintain and support the system through ongoing maintenance and technical assistance, giving the family confidence that one of the farm’s most important assets will continue performing for years to come.
Looking ahead
The Van Reenen family’s ambitions stretch far beyond vegetables. Their future plans include continuing to build a diversified farming business for future generations.
Reflecting on the journey, the family believes none of it would have been possible without strong partnerships.

South African farmers are no strangers to adversity. Every season brings new challenges—rising input costs, unpredictable weather, expensive diesel and the ongoing pressure of keeping essential operations running.
Kus tot Kruin’s story is a reminder that while these challenges are real, they don’t have to be faced alone.
This is not simply a story about solar panels.
It is a story about a family that had the courage to start over. A family that built a road where many believed none could exist. A family that refused to let difficult terrain, water shortages or energy uncertainty stand in the way of their vision.
It is also a reminder of the importance of finding the right partners—people who understand agriculture, remain committed long after the installation is complete and share a farmer’s determination to build something that will last.
Every farm’s journey is different. But if Kus tot Kruin’s story proves anything, it is that with faith, perseverance and the right people beside you, even the biggest challenges can become opportunities.
And perhaps that is the most valuable harvest of all.
